My Favorite Movies of All-Time
Okay, so here it is. A listing of my favorite movies of all time! When I started compiling this list, I noticed something interesting. With many movies it seems I like their sequels even more than the original. I don't think I can really explain why. It's probably something subconscious.
|
#15 - La Bamba (1987)
The story: This biography of Ritchie Valens shows us how he became a teenage pop sensation in his very short life. Starring Lou Diamond Phillips and Esai Morales, we see how a young Richie Valenzuela goes from poverty to super-stardom, and how he falls for Donna, only to lose it all in a horrible plane accident.
Best Quotes: "You got screwed, blewed, and tattooed!" - Bob (Ritchie's brother)
"My mom reckons I'm going to be a star. And stars don't fall from the sky." - Ritchie
Key Scene: Ritchie has reached stardom. He's on tour. Homesick, he phones home to find that his brother is the only one in the house. They make up for all their fighting, saying that no matter what they are still brothers.
Why It's #15: La Bamba might just be the best rock n' roll movie ever. But I have fond memories of watching it and Spaceballs back to back when my friends would sleep over as kids.

#14 - Snakes On A Plane (2006)
The story: Samuel L. Jackson is a cop who is taking a witness to LA to testify in a murder case, but when they get on their plane they soon find out that his mother fucking plane is filled with mother fucking snakes. Will they reach their final destination in safety?
Best Quotes: "I Have Had It With These Motha Fuckin' Snakes on This Motha Fuckin' Plane!" - Agent Flynn (Jackson)
"Time is Tissue" - Dr. Price
"Oh Great. Snakes on crack" - Agent Flynn
Key Scene: Of course you know it's at the climax of the movie when Sam Jackson says his very famous line. We stood and cheered during that scene.
Why It's #14: Snakes On A Plane brought back the true sense of hype to movies for me. Even during the same summer as Superman Returns, I found myself waiting more anxiously for SoaP. It goes down as my most enjoyable movie theater experience ever.

|
#13 - The Dream Team (1989)
The story: Four psychiatric patients go on a trip to New York City with their doctor to see a baseball game. The doc goes missing and the looneys are let loose on NYC all by themselves.
Best Quotes: "Ah, it's great to be young and insane! " - Billy (Michael Keaton)
"I am the Lord they God. Thou shalt not have strange gods before Me. Out of my way, asshole." - Jack (Peter Boyle)
Key Scene: Jack, who thinks he's the son of God, goes to church and strips down in front of all the church-goers.
Why It's #13: If I'm ever in the need of a good laugh, I put on The Dream Team. I love how easily four lost mentally insane people can blend into the downtown core of a large metropolis.

#12 - Animal Instincts III: The Seductress (1996)
The story: Joanna Coles is a famous author who also happens to be an exhibitionist. She likes when people watch her have sex. Alex Savage is a music producer and a voyeur. He pretends to be blind so girls will get naked in front of him. These two hook up and trap each other into mind games of sex and passion.
Best Quotes: "Sampling is stealing. If you sample, you're a thieft. Plain and simple. And Shayne Hooligan was sampling my best girl" - Alex.
Key Scene: Alex and Joanna have a hot tub orgy with Lolli and the two maids that were cleaning the bathroom. What can I say, that's hot.
Why It's #12: Sure it's a tit-flick, but while most movies of this genre are pretty weak on story, I find the notion of a man pretending to be blind to get girls to lower their inhibitions a fascinating one. Next time you see a blind man, he's probably looking at your boobies.

|
#11 - Ed Wood (1994)
The story: This is the story of Edward D. Wood Jr... The worst movie director ever. Johnny Depp plays Ed Wood, who dreams of being a great Hollywood director.
Best Quotes: "Okay, how about Doctor Acula?... DoctorAcula? .... Doctor.... Rrrrracula!" - Ed Wood (Depp)
"How do you do it? How do you get all your friends to get baptized just so you can make a monster movie?" - Bunny (Bill Murray)
"Let's hear you call Boris Karloff a cocksucker." - Bunny
Key Scene: Ed reveals to his girlfriend that the reason all of her sweaters are out of shape is because he likes to dress up in women's clothing.
Why It's #11: For anyone that has a dream and wants to do it their own way, this is the movie for them. This movie inspires me every day because I know that as long as I love what I'm doing, then other people will love it too. And let's not forget that I wrote a song called Dr. Acula that was inspired by this flick.

#10 - The Karate Kid Part II (1986)
The story: Daniel and Mr. Miyagi go to Miyagi's home of Okinawa to see Miyagi's dying father. When they arrive in the old village, trouble is soon to start and Daniel must learn more traditional karate. This time Daniel isn't fighting in a tournament. He's fighting for his life.
Best Quotes: "Daniel-san, never put passion before principle. Even if win, you lose." - Miyagi
"Aha... here are the Two Rules of Miyagi-Ryu Karate. Rule Number One: "Karate for defense only." Rule Number Two: "First learn Rule Number One." - Miyagi
Key Scene: It's all about the famous ending where Daniel goes face-to-face with Sato's nephew. Live or Die, man? HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONK!
Why It's #10: I mentioned the sequel situation above, and I prefer the second installment of Karate Kid because Daniel's challenges are tougher. I also really like seeing Miyagi's history implemented more in the story. When I was a kid, this was on The Movie Network every day and I used to get that song "The Glory of Love" stuck in my head for hours on end.

#9 - Labyrinth (1986)
The story: Sarah, forced to babysit against her wishes by her evil step-mother, gives her baby brother to the Goblin King. When she decides she needs her brother back, she must travel through David Bowie's Labyrinth to find the child.
Best Quotes: "I ask for so little. Just fear me, love me, do as I say and I will be your slave." - Jareth (Bowie)
"No, I said "'allo," but that's close enough." - The Worm
"It's so stimulating being your hat." - The Hat
Key Scene: Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, gets up and boogies when Bowie breaks out into the "Magic Dance" number. You remind me of the babe...
Why It's #9: Much like La Bamba, this was a movie we watched during late Friday night sleepovers. Before I ever knew about Ziggy Stardust or Modern Love, I knew all the words to the Labyrinth soundtrack. The big lesson is to be careful what you wish for, because the goblins just might make it come true.

#8 - The Goonies (1985)
The story: A group of misfit kids go on a treasure hunt to save their homes. When escaped criminals discover their plan, they follow in hopes of scoring One-Eyed Willie's treasure for themselves.
Best Quotes: "Don't you realize? The next time you see sky, it'll be over another town. The next time you take a test, it'll be in some other school. Our parents, they want the best of stuff for us. But right now, they got to do what's right for them. Because it's their time. Their time! Up there! Down here, it's our time. It's our time down here. That's all over the second we ride up Troy's bucket." - Mikey
Key Scene: Andy is forced to play the bones so the Goonies can escape. He piano lessons are foggy at best, and they can only help her so much when she's playing on a keyboard made of bones. The Goonies band together and cheer her on, and they escape by the skins of their neck... but for how long will they be safe?
Why It's #8: I like it as a kid, and I love it now. Richard Donner is a bloody genius when it comes to making movies. For any kind of kid who ever felt like they didn't belong in the "in-crowd", the Goonies makes you feel warm inside. Goonies never say die.

#7 - The Secret of NIMH (1982)
The story: Mrs. Brisby, a talking mouse, must move her house before the plow runs it over in the field. She must go to the Rats of NIMH for help. The only problem is that while most rats are good, some are terribly evil.
Best Quotes: "Courage of the heart is very rare. The stone has a power when it's there." - Nicodemus
"Right. When you're right, you're right, and you're right. None of the girls I meet wanna get serious." - Jeremy
Key Scene: Mrs. Brisby is so determined to save her son Timmy that she visits The Great Owl for advice. She's scared because she knows that owls eat mice. But she must swallow her fear for her son's sake.
Why It's #7: Everyone had that one cartoon growing up. You know the one. You watched it so much that your parents had to buy a second copy of it because you wore out the VHS watching it over and over. This one was mine. I was never really into the Disney-thing, and The Secret of NIMH is almost anti-Disney, seeing as how it is darker, smarter, and doesn't have any stupid sing-a-long songs.

#6 - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
The story: Darth Vader is obsessed with finding Luke Skywalker, yadda yadda, I am your father.
Best Quotes: "Shut him up, or shut him down" - Han Solo
"You like me because I'm a scoundrel." - Han Solo
Key Scene: Luke meets Yoda for the first time, not realizing who this little green creature really is. Yoda gets in a fight with R2-D2, and their battle for that little flashlight is truly one for the ages.
Why It's #6: Some days I wish the trilogy ended after Empire. I really don't like the ending of Return of the Jedi in case you're wondering. There was so much lead up in Empire for Luke to turn to the dark side, and it never happpend. Bollocks. In my first year of high school, The Empire Strikes Back was my Friday-evening-order-a-pizza movie. I like it best of all six Star Wars flicks because it gets right into the action. And this is Han Solo's best movie too.

#5 - Rocky IV (1985)
The story: A Russian boxer named Ivan Drago comes to town and beats Rocky's best friend Apollo Creed to death in the middle of the ring. Rocky then goes against his wife's wishes and travels to Russia to battle Drago to avenge his friend's death.
Best Quotes: "If I can change, and you can change, everybody can change!" - Rocky
"I must break you." - Drago
Key Scene: Rocky is training in Soviet Russia, and he's doing it the old fashioned way! He's lifting carrying logs, and lifting rocks, and running in the snow, and he even stops to help a carriage that tipped over. Rocky is a caring man, you know. It all comes to a boil with Rocky on top of a mountain shouting Drago's name.
Why It's #5: Everywhere I go, I sing my Rocky IV song. Rocky IV isn't so much a movie as it is an hour and a half long music video. At times it seems like we get montage after montage, but the pacing is so incredible. You really don't want to leave your seat at any point during the movie. And like any other Rocky movie, when it's over, I feel like I can beat up anybody.

#4 - License To Drive (1988)
The story: Les needs his license to get the girl of his dreams. However, Les fails his driving test. He doesn't tell his parents and he goes on the date anyway, in his grandfather's classic car.
Best Quotes: "Could you take the car out of neutral? We just got passed by a street sweeper." - Dean (Corey Feldman)
"An innocent girl, a harmless drive. What could possibly go wrong?" - Les (Corey Haim)
Key Scene: After totalling his grandfather's car, Les returns home to find out that his pregnant mother has gone into labour. It's not up to a license-less Les (ALLITERATION RULES!) to drive what's left of the wrecked car to the hospital. And the bloody thing only drives in reverse now.
Why It's #4: For a guy who doesn't drive, you might wonder why this movie is on my all-time favorite's list. Well, it has BOTH Coreys, and it's all about trying to get that one girl who makes you see stars. If you can impress a girl with a ride on the public bus, you must be really good in bed.

#3 - Ghostbusters (1984)
The story: Three scientists start up their own Ghost-catching business when they are fired from the University they work at. Coincidently, Gozer (the mother of all evil spirits) is planning to visit New York City. Who you gonna call?
Best Quotes: "Ray, when someone asks you if you're a *God*, you say "YES"! " - Winston Zedmore
" 'Get her.' That was your whole plan, huh, "get her." Very scientific." - Dr. Peter Venkman (Bill Murray)
"I'm fuzzy on the whole good/bad thing. What do you mean, "bad"?" - Venkman
"Egon, this reminds me of the time you tried to drill a hole through your head. Remember that?" - Venkman
Followed by... "That would have worked if you hadn't stopped me." - Dr. Egon Spengler
Key Scene: In order to save New York from a giant marshmallow man, the Ghostbusters do the one thing they weren't supposed to do. The one thing that is so dangerous it could neutralize the entire world. They cross the streams.
Why It's #3: I think this is the funniest movie ever made. It's so brilliantly funny through characterization. Me and my closest friends treat Ghostbusters as a guide to life... a bible if you will. When we come to a problem in life, we consult Ghostbusters and decided if it's worth crossing the streams to solve.

#2 - The Princess Bride (1987)
The story: Princess Buttercup is about to marry Prince Humperdink, but her true love returns from the dead to be with her. Humperdink still insists on marrying her though, because he's going to murder her to start a war.
Best Quotes: Every line in this movie is a memorable quote, so I'm going to pick just one that is hardly every referred to... "Sonny, true love is the greatest thing, in the world-except for a nice MLT - mutton, lettuce and tomato sandwich, where the mutton is nice and lean and the tomato is ripe..." - Miracle Max (Billy Crystal)
Key Scene: Westley, having been mostly dead all day, rises before Humperdink and triumphantly orders him to "Drop your sword".
Why It's #2: I first saw this movie in the summer of '88. My friend Ryan (yes, his name too) and I were in a Mac's Milk store to rent a movie and he suggested The Princess Bride. I wanted to rent the G.I. Joe movie, but he convinced me to get the Princess Bride instead. And I'm really glad he did, because we can all learn so very much from this movie about love, truth, honor, friendship, and loyalty. And it's got Andre The Giant in it.

#1 - Superman II (1980)
The story: Three Super-Baddies escape from the Phantom Zone and go to planet Houston to rule. When they find out that Superman is there and he's the son of their jailor, the biggest fight of all time begins.
Best Quotes: "So... this is Planet Houston..." - General Zod (Terrence Stamp)
"General, would you care to step outside?" - Superman (Christopher Reeve)
"Kneel Before Zod!" - Zod
Key Scene: Superman has tricked the Phantom Zoners into losing their super powers. Zod declares that Superman must take his hand swear eternal loyalty to Zod. Superman crushes Zod's hand and that awesome Superman theme song kicks in... BUT WAIT! My favorite movie of all time has two key scenes! Non and Ursa (two of the baddies in black) pick up a bus and throw it at Superman in downtown Metropolis.
Why It's #1: I've always said that any movie where someone throws a bus at another person is worthy of my money. Superman II is the movie that is engrained in my brain. Quoting it word for word isn't enough. I have all the soundtrack cues and camera shots committed to memory too. I've seen it THAT many times.

Well, I hope you enjoyed this look into my favorite movies.
