Good-bye Ban Righ Hall

I swore on my first day there that I'd quit. Nine years later, I kept my promise.

It was fun while it lasted, but eventually and inevitably it all became as stale as the hamburger buns. Ban Righ Hall wasn't my first job, but I started there in September of '98... just as my last year of high school was beginning. It was a minimum wage job, mostly washing dishes, and it occupied my Saturday evenings and Sunday mornings.

Working in the dishroom there was my first experience of "a good honest day's work". It was long, hot, sweaty, and smelly. I made some good friends there and even dated a co-worker for a while. The longer I stayed, the more money was thrown my way, which eventually led me out of the dishroom and in front of everyone else.

It was a great job while I was in college. It's hard to find a job (part-time at that) which will give you more than ten dollars an hour, all the food you can eat, and all the pretty girls you can talk to. The people were great too. I forged many of my closest friendships while working there.

Yeah, the people are what I'm going to actually miss.

I was known around the Queen's campus as The Ban Righ Guy. Students bought me drinks at the bars. Some of the girls even invited me up to their dorm rooms. I had to say no thank-you to those latter offers seeing as how I had started dating my now-fiancé by that point.

Along the way something changed. Both in the job and in me. Raises were still thrown at me, but it all stopped being about money to me. It wasn't fun anymore. I wasn't happy anymore. I just didn't want to play anymore.

I learned much from Ban Righ Hall... about work, about life, and myself. I hope that when I look back on it all I'll remember the smiles and laughs and the finger-in-the-hole game more so than the many reasons I finally decided to leave.

Thanks to everyone I worked with and around for the good times. I'll think of you all when I'm enjoying the new ones that come.
