![]() ![]() All About The Imports It takes a long time to develop a favorite drink. For years my favorite was Guinness, mostly because that was the most prestigious taste I had ever let sit in my mouth. Then I started getting into a little something called the micro-brewery, and I started drinking some ales known as Hobgoblin and Fiddler's Elbow. Your new goal in life is to find those and taste them. I soon after started buying my beer based on the label on the bottle. It became my preference to try something new every time I made a purchase, and I began trying beers that were made with berries, some with chocolate, and some that had an alcohol content of over 15%. I can safely say the only one I've never enjoyed was Kastell, which tasted like someone had set a glass of Coca Cola on fire. Recently, I picked up the Irish Pack, which was Guinness, Harp, Kilkenny, and Smithwicks. A great pack for someone just getting into imports, but I had those drinks a million times already. I really only picked it up because it was the only good import selection that day at the store. If you can find it, make sure you try Monty Python's Holy Ale. It's good tasting, and fun to drink too. My favorite though, is an ale by the name of Old Speckled Hen. I could have that every day for the rest of my life and be happy. Cheap Beer Has It's Place Too ![]() Yeah, you might be right. But there are some really good beers that won't break your bank. These days it seems like Alexander Keith's India Pale Ale is the new college rage. Basically it's what the "cool" kids are drinking to seem more upper class than the Molson and Labatt drinkers of yesteryear. And good for them. Keith's is a good beer. If you like that one, I'd also recommend one called Maclay's. It's roughly the same price, and a little better tasting too. Here in Canada we have something known as the "Buck Beers". Basically, it's twenty-four beer for $24. Most of them are complete shyte, but if you are at a cottage party, it's a great way to get super-smashed and not worry if a couple of your bottles get stolen. Of all the "Buck Beers" Lakeport is the standout as far as taste goes. And it doesn't give you the shits as bad as some of the others. And with that said, I can't tell much difference between a Lakeport and a Molson Canadian, so if it's party-time, then I'll save my money and drink Lakeport. In The End... If you're like me and you've drank your fair share of beer, then you'll notice that some beers taste different in the bottle than they do from the tap. I've also been told that many of the imports change taste when they cross the ocean as well. Someday I'll do a tour of Europe and take notes on that. Basically, drink what you like. You can't help what you like. If you like Labatt Blue, that's fine. Good for you. You won't catch me drinking it any time soon. I'll stick with my snobby, bitter beers.
