Divine Intervention
In this short film, directed by Mark Goles, we get a look at why you are supposed to live the day-to-day in the norm. Goles also stars as a 9/11 firefighter dealing with his own inner trauma. His woman is pregnant, and ready to pop, yet this firefighter finds his excitement in the arms of a callgirl. Together they disobey the laws of God and Man, and ultimately pay the price in the end.
The Good: There's about five minutes of solid camera work/editing right in the middle of this short film (Bed/bath sequence) that are really gripping and enticing. Andrea Eve stars as the callgirl, and she's obviously the standout of the entire cast. As a Bon Jovi fan, imagine my surprize to see the opening credits hand in hand with the New Jersey kid himself. Divine Intervention sports a very truthful moral, and it's one that more people should really listen to.
The Bad: You can definitely tell this is an independant movie. Audio levels aren't consistant, and the actors' pacing slows down especially during one-on-one conversations. The problem is mostly due to the stillness of the camera. It holds the frame for too long. Some quicker edits and different angles would've really made the cast stand-out... especially some headshots and close-ups. And as much as I love Bon Jovi, I really don't like Madonna. But that's just nitpicky on my part. Her song was definitely appopriate.
The Verdict: Divine Intervention has some great ingredients. I'm thinking of the old saying, "Don't sell the sizzle, sell the steak", but in this case the steak is already there and needs more sizzle. Definitely check the film out (I watched it at http://andreaeve.tv/). It can be seen as a great stepping stone from XR Entertainment and Mark Goles. I'll be interested to see what comes next from them.
