Guitar Hero: Aerosmith
Rather than put out a new studio album, Aerosmith has decided to give us another "Greatest Hits" package, this time cleverly disguised as a Guitar Hero video game. It's a neat switch though, as you follow the band from it's early years right up to the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame.

The Good: Guitar Hero is a fun game, there's no doubt about that. And if you're an Aerosmith fan (like me!) then this is the game for you. The band's best rockers are included in this game, and they shy away from the mushy-gushy power ballads. It's really cool that the band members were motion-captured so that their real moves would be used in the game. And the history lessons are great. Not just about the band, but you get to learn about Max's Kansas City and other significant venues. I have a PS2, so I got stuck with the shitty guitar, but from the looks of the Wii and XBox guitar controllers, they're pretty awesome. And much like playing as Slash in Guitar Hero III, you can unlcok Joe Perry, Brad Whitford, Tom Hamilton, and even DMC (yes, from Run DMC).

The Bad: If you aren't already an Aerosmith fan, the song list might quirk you a bit. You won't find radio hits like Dude (Looks Like A Lady), The Other Side, Cryin', Jaded, or Janie's Got A Gun. So if you're just a casual fan who owns one of the twenty different Aerosmith compilations, you probably won't know most of the songs in the game. But hey, that could also be viewed as a positive, both for you and the band. There also isn't really anything new here game-wise. It's exactly the same game as Guitar Hero III, just with Aerosmith songs. And even though the motion captures are neat, sometimes they're kinda creepy looking. Not that you'll really see them much. Chances are you're focussing on those colored dot-note-things.

The Verdict: I think of GH: Aerosmith as a good accompaniment to the GH Franchise. It's a nice little extra for those gamers looking to keep their whistle wet. The game is great if you're already an Aerosmith fan, or if you're looking to get more into their rockin' music as opposed to the Power-Ballad band they became known as in the 90s. And that's that. It's a really split game. I love it, but that might because for the first time, I know all the words to 95% of the songs in a Guitar Hero game. This really is one that you'll have to check out and decide for yourself.
