Howard The Duck
Originally released in 1986, Howard The Duck is finally on DVD. It's a great big cheeseburger with a side of bacon, and is generally considered one of George Lucas' flops. It's no Star Wars Holiday Special, but really what is? This adventure follows Howard...yes, the duck... who is magically transported from his planet to ours. He meets Beverly (played by the incredibly super-uber-mega gorgeous Lea Thompson) and helps her to become a rock goddess, all while trying to get home and save Earth from the evil clutches of Jeffrey Jones (played by The Dark Overlord). No wait, Jones is the actor. Stupid me.
The Good: Well, I suppose this all depends on your idea of what "good" is. I love this movie and have been waiting patiently for it on DVD for a long time. Lea Thompson might be the babe to end all babes (not that ending all babes would be a good thing). There's this scene where she's running around in her nighty trying to get a rise out of Howard and until it's over you don't realize just how wrong it is that you're watching her get all sexy for a duck. Another great aspect is that this movie is that the main character isn't one of those silly CGI effects. Howard, though incredibly silly looking walking around and smoking a cigar, is REALLY THERE. The actors are really interacting with him. And Jeffrey Jones is Jeffrey Jones. His work does no wrong. He probably could've saved the Star Wars Holiday Special for Mr. Lucas. I bet if he would've stayed in "Dark Overlord" character a little longer, he might've had a chance of catching Ferris.
The Bad: Sometimes the movie seems a little long and you're saying to yourself, "Dude, either just get the hell home or make Lea Thompson lay an egg." Oh, and Lea Thompson is never actually naked in the movie, which is a total downer. The Special Features aren't anything worth quacking over either. I could've been happy with some deleted scenes, even though the teaser trailers are fun.
The Verdict: My old VCR (ask your parents what that is) wrecked both of my Howard The Duck tapes, so I'm very happy to finally have it on DVD. It stems from a long line of cheesy 80s sci-fi n' fantasy movies that have special places in our hearts. Who knows, maybe next I'll finally buy a copy of "My Stepmother Is An Alien".
