Milli Vanilli: Girl You Know It's True
Released in 1989, this record was a smash-hit. It made girls scream, it made us all blame shit on the rain, and we learned the importance of making sure girls wouldn't forget our number. They were even popular enough to warrant an appearance on the animated Super Mario Bros. 3 cartoon series. But then we all found out that Rob Pilatus and Fab Morvan (that's the coolest name ever) were actually just pretty boys who were lip-synching. They did a total one-eighty and became the biggest joke in musical history. Aside from the shame of lip-synching though, how is the actual record? I decided to give it a listen today, to mark the 20th anniversary of the album.

The Good: These songs, while pure pop cheese, are really quite well put together. You can dance to them. You can sing along. Hell, you can even lip-sync along! There's even an interesting cover of "It's Your Thing" here. Listening to this album kinda makes me wanna go and get a shirt that says "Gotta blame it on something..."

The Bad: These songs, while really well put together, are pure pop cheese. For that reason alone, many people will hate it. There's even an interesting cover of "It's Your Thing" here. The end of the LP has a remix of "Girl You Know It's True" which just seems silly to me. Save those remixes for the singles. Having it there just seems like you ran out of original songs and needed some filler space. And the more I unfortunately seem to pay attention to the record it really seems like EVERY song has the same drum loop.

The Verdict: I know I'm not about to turn anyone into Milli Vanilli fans here. That's not my plan. And it's not like I'm trying to say that they've been unfairly blacklisted over the years. I just think I should point out that even though two pretty boys lip-synched over some pretty allright songs, it's not the music's fault. We gotta blame it on something, so let's stop blaming it on Rob and Fab, and let's finally just blame it on the rain.
