My Pet Monster - The Complete Series on DVD
My Pet Monster is one of those cartoons from our '80s childhood that would randomly show up again on Sunday afternoons in the late '90s when a football game would end early and the television stations needed something cheap to fill up the time slot. It's a fantastic cartoon, that for some strange reason only lasted one season. Based off a doll for boys when all cartoons were pretty much 30-minute advertisements, this Monster is a magic doll that comes to life when you unlock his shackles. He's best friends with Max and Chucky, and he is hunted by the evil Beastur.

The Good: It's all here. All 16 episodes make this DVD collection. You get to see Beastur's bumbling attempts at catching Monster. And the episode where they actually go to Monster-Land isn't missing either. That's pretty much the reason I bought this set. When I was a kid, I remember seeing that episode and thinking the shit had indeed hit the fan. Fuck, we were actually seeing
what Monster-Land looked like. That's huge for a seven year old kid. And I never again saw the episode because for some strange reason, the repeats were always the one where Monster enters a pie-eating contest. Yes, that's a good episode too, but it lacks the sense of mystique that only Monster-Land can provide.

The Bad: There's nothing to really complain about as far as this show goes. It's still good fun as an adult, and I think small children today could really get into it. It's not overly dated like some cartoons from that time period. However, this DVD set totally missed an opportunity to include the live action My Pet Monster movie, even though it's very hard to watch. Somewhere I have it on VHS. No, you don't want to borrow it.

The Verdict: I only paid $16 for two-discs of My Pet Monster. That's a dollar an episode. And if I watch just one each day, then I have entertained myself for half of the month for about the same cost as a hooker from Napanee. In today's rough economy that's $16 well spent.
