"Rasl" by Jeff Smith
Jeff Smith, the independant comic book genius who gave us Bone, has just debuted his new series Rasl. It's about an art thief who can travel from place to place using "The Drift" as a means of entering those hard-to-reach spots.
The Good: Smith's sense of storytelling is incredible. His artwork's flow has always had a strong pace to it, that even when Rasl is just sitting at a bar talking with the barkeep, it doesn't seem like it's forever. Jeff's work is what got me interested in black n' white comics in the first place, and to this day he still is the best at it. It's a nice change to see Smith working with more "real" characters, such as cops n' robbers.
The Bad: Seeing as how it's the first issue of a new series, I think it should've been longer and contained some more meat. We're given many tastes of things to come, and many questions left unanswered for further issues, but there wasn't anything in this comic that makes me overly anxious for the next issue. I hope I'm wrong, and when #2 comes out, we'll see.
The Verdict: Jeff Smith is at an odd point in his career. His success with Bone was so large that everything he produces now will be forever compared to his first triumph. Rasl seems like it will be a good story once it really gets going. But I might just wait for the trade paperback collected edition.
