Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
I didn't get myself overly hyped for this movie until the day it came out. I was far too busy watching old Transformers cartoons on DVD. But my last minute hype didn't disappoint. It's the second installment of the Autobot/Decepticon war. This time, the stakes are higher, as the Decepticons search for a machine that will eat Earth's sun and convert it into Energon.
The Good: Personality! That's the one thing that was missing from the first movie that was fixed for the sequel. The Decepticons aren't all the same. Starscream is now a real character. Megatron turned truly nasty. Devestator and Soundwave both show up this time. Yes, MOTHER FUCKING SOUNDWAVE! Oh, and Transformers staples such as The Matrix of Leadership and Energon become important parts of this story. *spoiler* After Optimus Prime is killed this battle really becomes uphill for the Autobots, and I was happy to see such a bold challenge. You get to thinking, How are they gonna do this without their leader?
The Bad: It's a Michael Bay film, and that means a lot of intense fast-moving close-up action shots. Sometimes it can get pretty hard to tell what's happening in those fight scenes.
The Verdict: Revenge of the Fallen captures the essence of Transformers much better than the first film did. It's great for new fans of the characters and has just enough nods to the old school fanboys to keep them from moving out of their parents' basement any time soon. It's funny, it's got babes, and lots of explosions. What more could you ask for in a summer blockbuster? How about previews of the new G.I. Joe and Harry Potter movies? Yep, we got those too.
