Top 11 Best Superhero Movies
Here's a list that's always open for debate, and can constantly change from summer to summer. But for now (and this is my revised version too) here are my picks for eleven best Super-Hero movies.
11 - The Dark Knight
Here's a movie that had potential to be #1 on any list. Any time you've got Batman versus The Joker, big things are gonna happen. Heath Ledger was great as the Joker, and Two Face was the best he's ever been on screen, but sadly it was the Dark Knight himself that brought this movie down a few notches. Still, if the movie woudl've just been called The Joker it might've been the best flick of all time. It's no secret how much I hated Batman Begins, and yet I was marginally impressed with the second installment. |
10 - Iron Man
Okay, so I haven't actually seen Iron Man yet. So basically I'm adding the movie to this list based on hype alone. It's not that I don't want to see it, I just didn't have time to check it out (note: the movie came out the same weekend as my wedding). So you best believe I'll be renting the DVD as soon as it's out. And hype like that (which apparently delivers) can get any movie on any list. Don't worry, I've seen all the others on this list. |
9 - Sky High
Cheesy. Campy. Predictable. And yet, this movie is full of charm. What if you were the child of the greatest superheroes on the planet? Going through puberty is hard enough, but doing it while developing super powers could only be an even bigger headache. This Disney movie is so full of super hero clichés it's hard not to like. It never once takes itself seriously, and the girl who plays Gwen Grayson is a hottie. I highly recommend checking this flick out. |
8 - The Crow
I was in Grade 7 when The Crow came out. At the time the big news was that Brandon Lee (son of Bruce Lee) was killed during the filming. It was also exciting that The Crow wasn't a mainstream comic book character. As an audience we had just seen two Batman movies that showed us how dark comic book movies could be. Then came the Crow and it showed us how much darker they could get. Seriously, next time you watch the Crow, turn off the color on your TV and watch it in black n' white. Caw, Caw, Bang, Fuck, I'm dead. Still funny. |
7 - The Incredible Hulk
Well it took Marvel long enough to deliver on their big green machine. The Hulk is one of those characters that is just known by everyone. Ang Lee made a movie about him and it totally flopped. I'm surprized a re-boot of the franchise came so soon, but clearly the public was ready to forgive and forget. Edward Norton did a great job of Mr. Banner, showing us that nerdy can be strong too. And not just on the inside. |
6 - Fantastic Four
Sure, it's cheesy... but so are comic books! But who in their right mind would take Jessica Alba and turn her invisible? Okay, now that I got that out of the way I was really skeptical about watching the FF. Their comics never really excited me, and their mid-90s cartoon was a bore. They had that awful film that was never released too. So I finally got up the nerve to watch this and it's very enjoyable. Lots of fun, and not too much thinking involved. Great popcorn movie. |
5 - Superman: The Movie
In 1978's Superman we don't even see The Man of Steel for the first 45 minutes. Instead, we're treated to an epic movie. Superman is a movie in three acts: Krypton, Smallville, Metropolis. This movie is so full of heart that if I need a transplant someday I'll just surgically implant one of my many VHS copies inside my chest. Hell, I should just do that anyway. Some people don't care for the "turning back the world" ending because it creates a plot hole. I say, it's Superman and he can do anything. This is a long movie, but well worth watching again and again. |
4 - Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
This is without a doubt the smartest, most action packed, and all-around best Batman movie ever made. It has the one thing that all live action Bat-flicks don't have: Batman as a detective. The Animated Series captured Batman in his most true form, and that sincerity translated perfectly onto the big screen version for Phantasm. Often overlooked and underrated, this IS Batman. |
3 - Spider-Man
Look out! Here comes the Spider-Man! Essentially a perfect movie, Spider-Man delivers action, romance, and comedy all in one. Geeks all around the world geeked-out when they saw Stan Lee, Bruce Campbell, and Macho Man in cameos. Girls thought Toby Maguire was cute. And dudes wanted to touch Kirsten Dunst's boobies in her wet shirt. Also, this flick possibly has the best comic-to-movie costume adaption. Well done! |
2 - X2: X-Men United
I'm ashamed to say I passed on seeing this in the theater. The first X-Men did the job of introducing all the characters, and then this one came along and blew us all away with the action and the story. And again Anna Paquin is hot, but now she's a little older and we don't feel so bad. I can't say anything about this movie that hasn't already been said, so I'm just going to tell you all to buy the DVD. |
1 - Superman II
Kneel before Zod! My excitement for Superman II grows by the day it seems. I get happy in any movie when I see someone throw a bus at somebody else. In Superman II, three villains from Krypton come to Planet Houston to rule...finally to rule! When they realize they're actually on Earth they'll just rule it instead. Superman is off making the love to Lois Lane and he gives up his powers to be with her! When a no-powered Superman learns that Zod and his posse are on Earth he has to get his powers back and save Planet Houston. Add in the fact that there's a Richard Donner cut of this movie and you have two different movies that occupy the #1 slot. If only they could still make Superman movies this good. |
